Govan Boat Shed
The whole building is a door and a roof. Everything else follows the boat.
A 14-metre timber span for building wooden boats, with a teaching bay and a door the width of a hull.
The trust builds and repairs wooden craft up to 11m. That single number set the building: a 14m clear span, a 5.4m eaves height, and a sliding door 6m wide at the river end.
The frame is glulam rather than steel, which the trust asked for and which suits a shed 40m from tidal water that nobody was going to repaint. The posts and rafters went up in nine working days with one telehandler and four joiners, and the trust’s own apprentices fixed the roof deck.
Cladding will be profiled fibre cement on the two weather sides and larch on the two that are not. The teaching bay sits under the hip at the landward end, with a mezzanine for drawing and lofting.
Wind and watertight is programmed for August 2026, and the first hull is due in the shed before Christmas. Current forecast is £1,340 per square metre, and we publish that number because it is the first thing every trust asks.
